Verification on 'no need' for saddlebag supports

Hello all,
Getting my bags from Ebay in a few days but I still haven't forked over the $$$ Suzuki wants for the supports. Several people have indicated that I probably don't need them, and can tie off using other items on the bike. If I don't need them, then what is their purpose per Suzuki? Thanks!
